Stress Management

All of us in the modern world know what stress is and what it feels like to be stressed. Stress happens when we have too much on our plate, and begin to feel overwhelmed or like we have too much to do and too little time. Unfortunately, this has become the norm for so many of our patients an even their children. Often, we work with patients whose musculoskeletal conditions are worsened by the stress that they are experiencing. Financial problems, fights with friends, family issues, job-related issues, school, athletic stress, the stress to succeed, illnesses and many, many other elements create stress in our everyday lives. Stress causes our body to release "stress hormones" that put our body into a fight or flight state of being. This can raise blood pressure, cause headaches, tighten muscles, cause fatigue, anxiety, stomach or digestion problems, sleep problems and can contribute to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes if left unchecked.

There are many ways to manage stress and chiropractic care can help. The muscular contraction that occurs with the “fight or flight” response to stress leads to uneven pressure on the body’s bones, resulting in spinal misalignment. Nerves also become irritated in response to chronic stress. A primary benefit of spinal adjustments is that muscular tension is released. Additionally, we use therapies to decrease irritation in the nervous system and increase blood-flow. These changes may be enough, in many cases, to convince the brain to turn off the “fight or flight” response, beginning the process of healing. A healthy and balanced spine is one key to effectively managing stress.

Our doctors of Chiropractic can also help with stress relief through nutrition and other aspects of our training. B vitamins, for instance, are central to improving the body’s response and energy levels. Drs. Melissa Noell, Susan Aurich, Marcus Villarreal will also sometimes suggest stress-reduction tactics and lifestyle adjustments to help steer your body toward relaxation. While you can never remove all the sources of stress from your life, chiropractic care can serve as a defense by adjusting your body into better balance and helping you respond in a healthier way. In these ways, we can help you relieve pain and prevent damage to your body. Call us today at (940) 566-3232 to begin feeling better and reduce your stress!
