Laser Therapy Provides Pain Relief

Sometimes life gives you minor pain issues that turn chronic or not respond to over-the-counter pain relievers. Over time, the pain can get to a point where it affects your quality of life. At Denton Chiropractic Center, we understand the challenges that you face when living with pain daily. Here's a look at how our chiropractic care and laser therapy treatment can help you feel better.

Why Laser Therapy Treatment?

The word laser conjures up images of an intense beam of light that cuts things in half, especially in movies. While lasers can and will cut through things, the types of lasers used by a chiropractor to treat pain are known as cold lasers or low level-laser therapy (LLLT). These lasers are low intensity and are incapable of harming human tissues. However, they do possess the ability to stimulate tissues and promote healing of areas that are injured.

How Does a Cold Laser Work?

A cold laser uses varying wavelengths and a low-level light to stimulate the tissues located under the skin. The cold laser uses a red beam that has a wavelength anywhere between 600 and 1000 nanometers and 5 to 500 milliwatts. In comparison, a surgical laser uses 300 watts when in use. The low intensity of the cold laser prevents it from burning skin.

Light from the laser is absorbed by the body. In turn, the light stimulates the body to increase circulation in the area and encourages the growth of cells needed for healing. The body creates healthy tissue to replace and repair the damage done by a chronic condition.

What Kind of Conditions are Treated by a Cold Laser?

Cold therapy lasers are used for a variety of conditions that involve soft tissues. Some of the issues treated by LLLT include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Knee pain
  • Tendonitis
  • Ligament strains
  • Pain from muscle spasms

Soft tissue injuries respond best to laser therapy treatment, but the pain from facet joints on the vertebrae is also known to respond to LLLT. The major advantage of laser therapy is that it works on a lot of pain issues that may not heal well on their own or don’t respond to traditional therapies.
