What to Expect from a Chiropractic Adjustment

If you are having a chiropractic adjustment for the first time, it is helpful to know what to expect. Our team at Denton Chiropractic Center is here to answer any questions that you may have about our chiropractic services. Let’s have a look and some of the common things involved in chiropractic adjustments.

What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a procedure where a chiropractor uses his or her hands to apply a sudden controlled force to a joint. The goal of an adjustment is to improve the spinal motion, which then improves the body’s physical function.

Before the Adjustment

At your first visit, the chiropractor will ask you a few questions about your health and perform a physical exam. We will pay close attention to the spine and recommend other tests, such as X-rays, if necessary.

During the Adjustment

You will lie on a specialized treatment table for your adjustment. You will be placed in a specific position to treat the affected area. The chiropractor then takes the part of the body that is being treated and moves it to the maximum range. We will then give an extra thrust to make the adjustment. You could hear a popping sound that is similar to your knuckles cracking.

After the Adjustment

You are not supposed to feel any pain during the adjustment. You could feel achy or sore after the treatment, similar to how it feels after a good workout. Any discomfort resolves within 12 to 48 hours.

These adjustments can be effective for treating back pain, as well as headaches and spine-related conditions such as neck pain. Not everyone responds to the adjustments the same and it will depend on your pain and particular injury. If your symptoms are not improving after the initial adjustments, then you may need additional treatments for optimal results.

Sometimes the adjustments require other supportive treatment options to effectively address the injury. Our chiropractors may also give you a few exercises to do at home as part of your chiropractic care. Posture techniques and personalized exercises can help your body maintain the changes that result from the adjustments.
